We are ready to put the AHD BioSand Filter project to vote. I've summarized the key information below, but more details such as AHD's profile and our correspondence with them is summarized on the project thread. Please let me know if you have any questions. The deadline to cast your vote is Wednesday, November 8th.

AHD proposes to provide nadi bio-sand filters to help 100 families in rural Sindh obtain clean drinking water. The filters have an innovative design that uses cheap and easily available materials. The life of a filter is 2 years.

Budget: approx. $1200
No. of filters: 100 (1 per family)
Cost per filter: approx. $9
Cost for transportation, installation and training: $300 ($3 per family)

Critical Need: High
Villagers rely on irrigation water for drinking, which is contaminated and brackish. Recent heavy monsoons have made the situation worse and there is a high incidence of water-borne diseases in the area.

Social Return: High
A very low cost filter that can provide clean drinking water for a family for at least 2 years (and likely longer) is a good investment.

Sustainability: Potentially very high
The filters are extremely easy to assemble and maintain, and rely entirely on locally available materials. The villagers should not need much continuing help from outside agencies.

Measurability: Medium-High
It is important that AHD provide good training along with the filters
themselves. We will ask AHD to provide the following information after receiving funding:
- Photographs
- Actual receipts for all expenditures
- Description of the training procedure and a tally of how many people in
each village received filter-building training.
- Two follow-up surveys: the first a few months after installation, and the second 2 years later to assess how many villages were able to continue building and maintaining the filters themselves.

Organization Credibility: Medium-High
AHD has installed nadi filters in other villages and our representative whow visited them was impressed with the filter he saw. There is some concern around whether the NGO has any linkages to the Church, but the President (Mr. Khurshid Bhatti) has assured us that they do not have any religious affiliations or goals. Our own diligence has shown that the NGO’s officers includes a member of the Church, and AHD appears to have received funding from the Church World Service. Based on ADP policy, neither of these are sufficient to disqualify the organization from receiving funding.
