I ran across some interesting stats on philanthropy by Pakistanis in the USA in a report by the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy. A lot of the findings make a strong case for an organization like ADP that provides volunteering opps and helps find deserving projects in Pakistan. The full text is available here.

1) US Pakistanis give 40% of their donations but only 6% of their volunteer time towards Pakistani causes in Pakistan. This is primarily due to the difficulty of volunteering for Pakistan while sitting here.

2) The majority of giving to Pakistan is directly to needy individuals, and it a large proportion is in the form of cash.

3) The most important factors influencing giving were i) large portion of donation going directly to intended beneficiaries, ii) quality of individuals representing organization and iii) organization is already well-known and reputable

4) There was very low trust in Pakistani NGOs. 81% felt that NGOs don't use money efficiently and to good use, 80% felt NGOs are not ethical and 71% think they are not effective at what they do.

5) Among the top factors that will increase their willingness to give: i) clarity on US laws about giving to Pakistan, ii) Easier mechanisms for transfer of funds to Pakistan, iii) Better and more frequent communications to donors and iv) regular and transparent financial reporting

6) US Pakistanis are solicited for funds much more frequently for US causes than for Pakistani. There is a proven correlation between being asked for a cause and giving to the cause, suggesting there is opportunity for Pakistani non-profits that become better at fundraising in the US.

7) The most effective ways to raise funds from US Pakistanis are recommendations from friends and family and visits by reps from the organization. E-mail solicitations and phone requests are considered the least effective.
