Project: Ambulance for rural community
Organization: Indus Earth
Project Team: Sana Ayub, Maira Azhar, Faraz Ahmed

Initial Questions from Shay and their answers:
1. How do people currently get to your facility?

On foot, bicycle, and bus.

2. What do these people do if they cannot travel to your clinic?

We have a Lady Health Visitor (LHV) that goes to these villages once a week. This is only because we are short staffed and do not have enough funds to allocate for more frequent visits.

3. How will you measure the success of this project?

We have a medical history of all who visit the clinic. We will be able to ascertain over a period of time if these individuals health has improved by the frequency of visits at the clinic and by the LHV visiting their villages.

4. Please provide information for the cost of each item that want ADP to fund.

1. Salary payment of one further Lady Health Visitor for one year (we need two). @ Rs. 15,000/mth. Total Rs.180,000.00.
2. Monthly petrol charges to the clinic and village visits in our vehicle (Potohar) This is all dirt road. Rs. 3500/mth including maintenance. For one year. Rs.42,000.00.
3. Second hand ambulance. Converted high roof Suzuki. Rs.400,000.00 plus Rs. 20,000 for conversion inside to have stretcher, oxgen cylinder etc. Total Rs. 420,000.00.

5. Are you creating a new clinic or just upgrading and purchasing an ambulance to use for an existing clinic?

Upgrading an existing one.

So we've been looking into this project in the UK and are currently filling in the Project Summary Form. We thought we'd put forward some opinions and get some advice if its available.

So the ask is for Rs 500-600k (To be clarified) to pay for an ambulance and one years worth of maintenance and also one years salary for a residential health visitor.

Our opinion is that the asset purchase of the ambulance itself is a good spend but we need to know what the plans for ongoing maintenance would be. So we'd discuss fee per use with NGO - and if its significantly cheaper than the alternative then that would be an improvement on a social level.

Have we looked at anything similar or do you have any opinions on this?

We haven't looked into funding an ambulance project before, but have the estimated cost for what a new suzuki pick-up van. You could use this as a benchmark, to figure out whether the cost of a refurbished Edhi ambulance is reasonable.

I'd encourage you to put together a list of questions and then have a call with the NGO, to flesh them out, prior to the EC call.

Based on my initial discussion with the folks at Indus, the two alternatives right now are to use a donkey-cart or for someone to wait on the main road for a bus for several hours, to try and catch one of the two buses that frequent the village daily.

Please let us know when you're ready for the EC call. Khurram, will be in touch to figure out scheduling.
