I was wondering if you should start considering some of the smaller organizations that will run out of funding soon and whom we know are doing good work on the ground?

Hi Mahjq,

United Way has emailed us to state that they have funds available for any relief and rehabilitation activities that need financial support in for the Earthquake affected families.

Their contact info is:

Shibani Sachdeva
Executive Director
United Way Mumbai

Landline : 00 91 22 2202 9658
Mobile : 00 91 98210 28854
Email : shibani@unitedwaymumbai.org
Email : Shibanisachdeva@hotmail.com
Website : www.unitedwaymumbai.org

I'd suggest getting in touch with them so these smaller organizations on the ground which are obviously the ones who are doing much of the outreach andd need financial assistance can be kept alive so that their work will continue.

In reply to Bariza Umar regarding PIMS and donations needed, just want to ask if they also need volunteer docotors? We have doctors who would like to come over and volunteer - please let us know via this thread.

Thanks!

News article from WHO, folllowing the first assessment of the earthquake hit areas. Snapshot of report....

ISLAMABAD, 13 OCTOBER, 2005: WHO’s Regional Director Dr. Hussein A.
Gezairy said that the devastation caused by the October 8 earthquake in
Pakistan is bigger than the Tsunami and Katrina. “It is not in the context of
number of deaths but the way earthquake has destroyed the infrastructure
particularly the health infrastructure that has completely been collapsed by the strong quake,” he remarked......

Dr. Hussein A. Gezairy maintained that Tsunami had left 1.5 million people
homeless while the earthquake sent 2.5 million people homeless. Millions others are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance, WHO Regional Director pleaded. Moreover, certain areas are still inaccessible.....

Here's a nice email of appreciation from one of our donors and also some useful info by him about an NGO working in Pakistan.

Hello,

Thank you for collecting funds for the Edhi Foundation.

Also, I would like to let you know about another NGO called Humanity First (www.humanityfirst.org), which is mobilizing to help in Pakistan. It is a 100%-volunteer staffed organization, which allows it to spend the majority of its donations on its relief programmes.

Sincerely,

Ali Hanafi

Hi

A professor at McCalister univerisity in Minnesota contacted us and was interested in raising funds for Pakistan.

His target is more specific i.e. He knew a pakistani family during his years in college. He lived in pakistan during 1994-96. Their son is now working for PIA and is incharge of the Swat area. He has reported that the Swat regions has been neglected.

He is looking to connect with pakistanis in Minnesota. He is also looking for the contact of Al-Fateen and Sons. If anyone know of them please contact Warren Anderson at warrenanderson@edinarealty.com

Thanks,

Mahjabeen

Mahjabeen,

Global council of Pakistan (GCPak) at University of Minnesota is having a fundraiser right now. They know a lot of Pakistanis there and may be able to help Warren.

Rizwan,

One of the first things ADP did after launching the online collection over the weekend was to contact PayPal to request a fee waiver. After a day of internal consideration at relatively senior levels, PayPal decided that they would lower our fees to the lowest tier available, but said that as a matter of corporate policy, they could not waive the fees.

We continue to work with the Pakistan Embassy in DC to make a case to PayPal to give a blanket waiver to earthquake collection efforts. My guess is that we will only get this waiver if we can convince PayPal to officially adopt us (or any other Pakistan earthquake relief fund) on their web site. I would ask your friends to write to PayPal to request that they reconsider their decision.

In the meanwhile, please know that the fee we are paying is lower than that offered by most online collection portals (such as Network For Good, Just Give etc).

Hope this helps.

Tarim

Thanks for the clarification. Can you put a number on it. I am trying to decide whether to write a check to EDHI direct or pay online to you guys.

Rizwan,

If you find writing a check convenient, I would recommend doing that instead of donating online. A check has no fee associated with it, and the PayPal fee will almost surely be more than postage. =)

As relief operations continue in Pakistan, a new website www.risepak.com
has just been launched to help coordinate emergency assistance to the hundreds of thousands of people in need of aid. The website is the result of a collaborative effort between people from the World Bank, the Government of Pakistan, academic institutions in the United States and Pakistan, as well as private enterprise.
