Hi all,

Members of ADP in the DC/VA/MD Chapter had our preliminary meeting to discuss the potential of a Chapter in the DC area. The people that managed to make it to the meeting (I should add on short notice,) included:

Adil Hussain
Roohi Abdullah
Ahmed Saeed
Roohi Hussain
Adil Shaikh
Omer Saeed
Sania Sufi
Khurram Jamali
Shahan Mufti

There were two other interested members that came but had to leave before the meeting got underway (due to the discrepancy between Pakistan Standard Time and American Standard Time. ) Summarized Meeting Minutes were as follows:

* The costs of initiating and maintaining a DC Chapter are relatively higher than initiating a VA or MD Chapter. Additionally most of the individuals that ADP would be interested in soliciting funds from, reside in the VA area. As a result it was decided that it might make more sense to being the chapter on a smaller scale, i.e., at the VA level, and once the chapter gained a foothold, one could initiate MD and DC Chapters within the VA Chapter.

* One problem with initiating just the VA Chapter would be that fund raising events would need to be limited to the VA area. This would not be a big issue initially because there are areas of VA right outside the DC area (i.e., Courthouse, Rosslyn, etc.,) which is close enough to DC for people to show up.

* With most expatriates making trips back to Pakistan in Dec / Jan, it would make sense to hold of any further discussions to Mid-Jan. We can then initiate the Chapter in 2006, and in fact, use the trips back to Pakistan to explore potential projects that the VA Chapter can fund.

* It was agreed that in the interim, the following tasks would be considered by members in the area:

1. Registration: Khurram is looking into getting ourselves registered in the state of VA so that we can raise funds as a non-profit here. The current ADP 501(c)3 should make the process fast and relatively painless.

2. Flesh out ADP's Chapter Model: Tarim from the California Chapter has already taken the lead in designing the working relationship between chapters. This mostly involves determining which functions and resources are shared vs. autonomous; other areas that still need to be fleshed out include how to ensure close communication and collaboration.

3. Initial Board Members: Roohi Abdullah, Adil Hussain and Ahmed Saeed have volunteered to be the initial board members of the VA area. Adil's management experience from work might be beneficial in him taking up the role of President. Additionally, Khurram will continue to help in bridging the distance between the Boston and VA chapters.

4. Initial Project: The members believe that initiating a project as soon as possible will be important before spreading the word informally to other possibly interested people in the area.

5. Building Active Member List: An active member list has been initiated with the addres "". Other people interested in joining the list, please let Khurram Jamali know (

Please let us know on our mailing list if you have any ideas or suggestions as to how to proceed from here; we will keep you posted on developments at our end.

This is great progress, Khurram. Thank you for initiating this, and thanks to Roohi, Adil and Ahmed for stepping forward as officers, and to everyone else who is working to launch the chapter.

Launching in VA sounds like a logical step. You may find over time that there is little impetus to launch a chapter within DC itself.

I expect we will begin the active debate on Tarim's chapter model proposal this week or next. This will help to resolve not only questions about how the various chapters interact, but what common processes chapters must adopt - such as election of officers, project selection, voting rights, diligence, etc.

I hope the DC-area team will be successful in identifying a project over the winter. It will probably make sense for DC to debate it's first project in collaboration with Boston and SF, but we can get into these details as we refine the broader procedures...

Thanks for the update. I look forward to seeing the DC-area chapter up and running soon!
