We are ready to put the Nilore Science Lab project to vote! I have summarized key information below, but more details such as our correspondence with Nilore and budget details are summarized on the project thread. We have been in touch with Nuzhat Ahmad the project liason for Ibtida. The only outstanding issue is the amount of funding required ($2900-$3500). Please refer to the project thread for more details on that.
Please let me know if you have any questions. The deadline for voting is Sunday, December 10th.
ADP has worked with Ibtida in the past to set up a computer learning center at Nilore school, and recently received a request to help set up a science lab.
Critical Need: High
• Nilore school is expanding (will have grade 8 in Spring '07) and needs science lab to fulfill academic requirements.
• A science lab is also an essential requirement to get affiliated with the AKU board. Nilore has fulfilled all the other requirements to get board affiliation (building, capital, playground, clean water, curriculum requirements etc).
• The school needs a physical science lab by January 2007 and has placed orders for materials and identified space for a lab.
AKU board affiliation will promote methods of teaching which focus on concepts rather than memorization. The board encourages computerized and diagnostic testing. Teacher training is provided to help develop better lesson plans. An AKU affiliate is visiting the school and helping introduce teachers to the new curriculum.
Equipping students with tools to pursue scientific query. Providing opportunity to rural school children to learn the basics of science through experiments and observations.
•Matric results won’t be available for another 3 years
•Focus groups/interviews can be conducted to examine the impact that the science lab is having on students learning
Initial capital required for setting up the lab. School will fund teacher’s salary after the first year. School’s operating budget is $7000/year and Ibtida fundraises for most of its projects in the US. Students pay a minimal fee of $1-$2/month on a sliding scale. Ibtida's past record with fundraising has been great and they have been able to raise funds to met their needs each year so we are confident that they will be able to maintain the lab.
Organization credibility: High
ADP has worked with Ibtida in the past. The computer project at Nilore was the first project ADP helped fund and has had great success. In our interactions, Ibtida seemed very responsive and is extremely interested in seeing the project through.
